What a session on the ice track looks like

The bookable ice karting in Levi runs to a simple pattern. You arrive at the track, get a full safety briefing, pull on warm clothes and safety gear, and then drive a first session of 15 minutes. After that comes a break by the fire with hot berry juice, and then a second 15-minute session on the same circuit. The whole outing is listed at 1 to 1.5 hours.

Thirty minutes at the wheel does not sound long on paper, yet the photos from the track explain why it fills the time so well. The circuit is laid out on a wide, flat field of snow and ice ringed by pine forest, with floodlights on poles for the dark hours and the karts lined up nose to tail between runs. Every corner asks you to steer early and brake gently, and most of the session is spent learning how little grip a studded tyre finds on frozen ground.

The break matters as much as the driving. Standing at the fire pit with a cup of something hot gives cold fingers time to recover before the second run, and it is where people compare lines through the bends. If you want food rather than juice, the listing notes a cafeteria at the track where you can buy something to eat.

Who may drive: height, age and experience

The rule that decides who drives is height, not age. The listing says everyone over 145 cm tall can take part, and that no previous driving experience is required. The track's own website puts it the same way: there is no age limit, but drivers must be over 145 cm.1 Levi's official tourism site repeats the 145 cm line.5

That makes ice karting one of the few motor activities around Levi that a tall child can do at the wheel. A snowmobile safari asks for a valid driving licence to drive, as the ice fishing trip by snowmobile states in its own terms, while an ice kart asks only that you reach the pedals and fit the seat.

Not everyone in a group has to drive. The listing says a person who does not want to drive can come along and watch the others on the ice. That suits mixed families: a younger sibling who is too short can stand at the fire and cheer, and a nervous adult can decide on the spot. Check on the booking page whether a spectator needs a ticket of their own, since the listing does not price that.

The karts and the track

The karts at Ice Karting Levi have 10 bhp, according to the track's own website.6 That is enough to feel quick on a slippery surface without being frightening, and the low seat puts your eyes close to the ice, which makes every slide feel faster than it is.

The track's site gives its address as Yrittäjätie 5 in Sirkka, the village at the foot of the fell, and its footer names the company behind it, Frostventure Oy, at Varikkosuora 1 in Sirkka.78 Levi's tourism site lists the same track under the name Ice Activity Park Levi, with two driving sessions, hot juice and transfers in one programme.9

Expect a surface that changes during the day. Cold, dry air keeps the ice hard and fast, while a milder afternoon softens the top layer and the karts dig in more. A track like this is shaped by snow ploughs and frost rather than by a fixed asphalt line, so the corners you drive in December may not be the corners of March. None of that is a fault: it is part of what makes the second session different from the first.

Getting to the track from Levi centre

You can come straight to the track by car, or take the shuttle bus from Levi centre, which the listing offers as an optional transfer. The track's own site says a shuttle leaves every hour from beside Kotipizza Levi at Hissitie 11, in the middle of the village.4

Including that ride, the track tells visitors to allow about 2 hours for the whole outing.2 The listing's own figure of 1 to 1.5 hours covers the time at the track, so plan an afternoon block rather than squeezing it between other bookings.

Advance booking is always required, the track says, so there is no turning up on spec.3 On GetYourGuide the karting listing can be cancelled free until a day before and paid for later, handy while you wait to see the forecast for your week.

When the track is open

Check the season before you plan around it. The track's own website says it was closed for the 2025/26 season and opens again daily from December 2026.10 The GetYourGuide calendar shows the dates on offer for the session you book, and that calendar is the place to confirm a slot.

December is also when the cold sets in. At the Kittilä Airport weather station the average December high is -5.6 °C and the low -14 °C, and January is colder, with a low of -17 °C.11 Mid-December has no daylight at all at that latitude, so a December session runs under the floodlights whatever the clock says.11

Later in winter the light returns quickly. Mid-February has 7.8 hrs of daylight and mid-March 11.5 hrs, with the March high at -2.1 °C.11 A March afternoon on the track means sun on the snow, softer air and more time to linger at the fire between sessions.

Dressing for an open-air track in the frost

An ice kart has no windscreen, so the speed of the kart becomes wind on your face. Lapland's rescue department warns that wind makes it feel colder, and that even just below zero a wind can quickly cause frostbite.12 The safety gear the listing provides goes on over your own clothes, so what you wear underneath still decides how warm you stay.

Cover the parts that freeze first. The Finnish Institute of Occupational Health names the tip of the nose, the cheeks and the earlobes as the places that easily get frostbite, and Visit Levi recommends a tube scarf, which protects the face as well as the neck.1314 A thin balaclava under a helmet does the same job without bunching.

Hands need a compromise between warmth and grip. Visit Levi says loose mittens keep hands warmest, with wool gloves underneath if you want them, and that is a sensible pairing here: gloves on the wheel, mittens back on at the fire.15 Never touch bare metal on the kart or the fire pit with naked skin, since the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health warns that contact frostbite from cold metal can happen within seconds.16

Karting, skating or both in one day

Ice karting and forest skating make an easy pair, since both start from the village and neither takes a full day. The skating session this site recommends lasts 2 hours, from the Levi Tourist Office with a short shuttle into the forest, while the karting listing runs 1 to 1.5 hours.

They feel very different. Karting is loud, fast and over in two bursts; skating on the lit trail is quiet and you set the pace yourself, with a kicksled for anyone who would rather be pushed than skate. Families with children of different heights often split this way: the tall ones drive, and everyone skates.

For something calm after the karting, book the skating for a later slot. The skating listing suggests later time slots for a chance of seeing auroras, never a promise. Dress for both in the same layers, and keep a spare pair of mittens dry in an inside pocket for the second activity.
