How much does ice skating cost around Levi? Anything from a public rink with your own skates to a guided session on a lit forest trail. Here are the from-prices of the bookable sessions, what rentals add, and where the ice costs nothing.

The quick answer
How much ice skating costs depends on three things: whether someone has prepared the ice for you, whether you bring your own skates, and whether a guide and transport come with it. A public rink with your own skates costs least; a guided session with transfers, gear, drinks and a warm hut costs most. Season and place add a fourth factor: in Lapland the ice is free to look at for months, but the prepared ice, the kind a beginner can enjoy, exists only where someone keeps it.
The guided session this site recommends sits at the full-service end. From $80 per person, it includes the shuttle from the Levi Tourist Office and back, ice skates and helmets, a kicksled for those who cannot skate, hot drinks, a guided session and a kota to shelter in, over 2 hours on a 1 km lit trail of natural ice.
Be clear-eyed about value. On GetYourGuide the session is rated 4.32 from 202 reviews, and guests score its value for money at 3.7, lower than its overall rating. Read recent reviews on the booking page, and set expectations: a short, beautiful session on natural ice rather than hours of open skating.

Match the budget to the outing you want
In Levi, there is an ice skating rink open to everyone, where you can ice skate with your own skates or rent them on-site.
Levi does have a public rink. Its tourism site describes a small natural-ice rink in the fell pond at the foot of the Front Slopes, open to everyone with their own skates or rented ones, from the end of January until week 10, weather permitting, and around the clock once it opens.1910 The page names no entry charge for the rink itself.11
The costs there are the gear. Zero Point Rental, on the Front Slopes at Hissitie 8, rents skates by the hour, for 2 or 3 hours, by the day and for several days, and rents helmets too.72312 Helmets are free of charge for children under 12.5 Bring your own skates and the rink costs you nothing but the walk.
So is ice skating free? On a public rink with your own skates, usually yes; Visit Finland notes that many Finnish cities have rinks where you can also rent skates.13 What costs money is everything that makes skating easier for a visitor: rental skates, transport into the forest, a guide, lights on a long trail, and a warm kota at the end.

The from-price of the forest session covers the session itself, but not everything you might spend. Souvenirs are for sale at the site and are not included, and the listing asks you to bring your own warm clothing. If you need to rent a winter outfit for the trip, Levi has a rental listing for complete clothing sets over 1 to 10 days, from $54.
The booking terms protect your money against the weather. In extreme cold of -30°C or below the session may be rescheduled or fully refunded, free cancellation runs up to 24 hours before, and you can reserve now and pay later. That combination lets you book early in your trip and keep the date flexible.
Getting to the village rink costs nothing if you are staying in Levi: it sits at the foot of the Front Slopes, next to Zero Point Rental.10 From the 2026-2027 season the ski bus ticket is included in all Levi ski passes, which helps if you are staying further out and skiing anyway.14 For the forest session, the shuttle is already in the price.
Kittilä village, south of Levi, has the municipal Agnico Eagle ice hall at Havutie 5, completed in 1997 with seats for 200 spectators.1516 Public skating there is normally Monday to Friday from 15.00 to 16.30.8
Outside those sessions the hall is freely open to skaters whenever no school, club or other group has booked it, the municipality says, and private time slots can be reserved for a fee.1718 Kittilä also makes an outdoor rink on the artificial turf of the village ball field.19
A past municipal family skating event at the Kittilä outdoor rink was free, with participants asked to bring their own helmets and skates.20 For a family staying in Levi with a car, a weekday afternoon in Kittilä adds indoor ice to the options; check the municipality's notices for the current timetable before you drive.
Rovaniemi is the clearest answer to whether ice skating can be free. The city has 20 skating rinks in parks in the central area, freely available for everyone with no limit on users, and the Suomi.fi listing for the service says it is free of charge.6214
The rinks are meant for learning to skate and practising ice hockey, and ice-making begins in November or December depending on the weather, with the season ending by the end of March at the latest.2223 In the city centre, Naava Café at Vanha tori rents skates and lets you use its outdoor rink as much as you like.24
Rovaniemi's forest skating park, Kotatieva, sits 10 km from the city centre and charges a day ticket, open daily from December to March.252627 Its prices are set by the park itself; this site lists only the from-prices that GetYourGuide shows live.
If the aim is learning rather than a holiday outing, Finland has free starting points. The Finnish Figure Skating Association says its Hippo skating school is completely free of charge for participants, aimed at children of all ages, over four skating sessions.2829
The association also says that in January 2027 the Finnish Ice Sports Days offer free, low-threshold chances to try ice sports and develop skating skills.30 More than 30 Finnish figure skating clubs run groups or courses for adults.31
Ice fishing, the other classic way onto Finnish ice, is free in the same spirit: Visit Finland says hook-and-line fishing is free for everyone under everyman's rights, as is ice fishing.32 The guided trips cost money for the guide, the gear, the transport and the fire, not for the right to fish.
