Levi, Lapland temperature and the ice season: when the lakes freeze

The Levi, Lapland temperature drops below freezing for months, and the lakes around the village turn to ice. Here is the cold month by month, when freeze-up and thaw come, how thick ice must be before anyone walks on it, and when to go to Lapland for skating.

Where the figures come from

Every monthly figure here is a 1991 to 2020 average from NOAA's archive for the weather station at Kittilä Airport.1 The airport is 15 km south of Levi, a 10-minute drive, and sits at the same low level as the village and the forest where the skating trail runs.6 A second station sits on top of the fell, high above the trail, and its figures are not used here.

For each month that archive holds the mean daytime high, the mean night low and the precipitation, which in winter falls as snow.1 Alongside, the daylight figures give the hours between sunrise and sunset at mid-month, worked out for Levi's latitude. They are hours of daylight, not of sunshine: a grey December noon is daylight on the calendar and dusk to the eye.

Lake ice has no single station of its own. The freeze-up and thaw dates below come from the Finnish Meteorological Institute, Visit Finland and the Finnish Environment Institute, which speak for Lapland or for named lakes rather than for one pond near Levi.237 Treat them as the pattern of the region, and the ice on the day as something only local people and guides can judge.

Autumn: first snow and the first ice

Winter comes early here. In Lapland, thermal winter usually sets in by mid-October, the Finnish Meteorological Institute says, and Levi's tourism site says the first snow typically falls in the second or third week of October.118 October at Kittilä Airport averages a high of 3 °C and a low of -2.6 °C, with 9.6 hrs of daylight at mid-month.1

The lakes follow. Visit Finland says lakes in Lapland usually freeze between late October and December, earlier than anywhere else in Finland.2 The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation explains the order: small and shallow waters freeze before large and deep ones, bays and shores first, open lake and flowing water last.12

November is the month of transition. The average high is -2.8 °C and the low -9.4 °C, and mid-November already has only 5.3 hrs of daylight.1 Levi's tourism site says that by November the ground is covered in almost half a metre of snow.13 Young ice is at its most deceptive now: it looks solid long before it is.

Midwinter: polar night and the deepest cold

In December the sun leaves. Levi's tourism site says polar night in Levi normally starts in December and ends in early January; for the 2025-26 winter it ran from sunset on 10 December 2025 to sunrise on 1 January 2026.1416 On the fifteenth of December the sun never clears the horizon at Levi.1

January and February are the coldest months. At Kittilä Airport January averages a high of -8.3 °C and a low of -17 °C, February a low of -16.4 °C.1 The end of January usually brings the coldest day of the winter, according to the Finnish Meteorological Institute, and Levi's tourism site warns of frost down to minus 30 degrees, made to feel colder by the Arctic wind.917

The extremes are far lower. Finland's lowest recorded temperature, -51.5 °C, was measured at Pokka in Kittilä on 28 January 1999.18 Skating listings plan for this: the forest skating near Levi may be rescheduled or fully refunded at -30°C or below. For the ice itself, deep cold is good news, since every hard night adds to its thickness.

Snow on the ground for more than half the year

Ice and snow arrive together and stay together. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says winter is Finland's longest season, about 200 days in Lapland, and that the ground in Lapland is typically covered with snow for over half a year.2425 At Pokka in Kittilä its typical date of first continuous snow cover is 9 October.26

Levi's tourism site gives the village's average snow depth as 75 cm.27 That snow shapes every ice activity here: trails between the rinks are cut through banks of it, ice tracks are framed by it, and a fresh fall has to be cleared before anyone can skate.

Snow on a lake is also a blanket. It slows the growth of the clear ice beneath and can turn to slush and refreeze as the weaker snow ice the safety bodies warn about. The official advice for visitors stays the same through all of it: a marked route and a guide, never a guess based on how white and solid a lake looks.15

How ice grows, and how thick it gets

Ice thickens with frost. The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation says that in calm weather ice can thicken by about 2.5 mm per day for each degree of frost.28 The Finnish Meteorological Institute says Finland's lakes are thickest in early April, at about 50 to 65 cm.10

Measured midwinter figures are lower. On 30 December 2022 the Finnish Environment Institute measured 38 cm of ice on Lake Inari at Paksuvuono and 37 cm on the Tornio river at Pello.729 The quality matters as much as the depth: Visit Finland calls clear ice strong and even, great for skating, while pale snow ice is weaker.30

Snow ice can mislead. The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation says porous snow ice has only about half the bearing capacity of clear ice, and the Finnish Meteorological Institute says snow ice cannot be counted in the effective thickness at all.3132 A thick-looking sheet can be mostly the weak kind.

How thick ice must be before anyone walks on it

The Finnish Border Guard gives the figures: at least 5 cm of clear ice is the minimum to walk on, 10 cm is preferred for an adult, and 15 cm is needed for a snowmobile or quad bike.4 The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation says 5 cm of flawless clear ice can carry a person walking alone, but recommends going only with a companion and only at 10 cm.33

Cracks and currents change everything. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says ice carries only about half its capacity at the edge of a crack and about a quarter where cracks cross.34 The Border Guard tells walkers to avoid spots with a water flow, such as narrows, straits, estuaries and capes.20

For a visitor, the official advice is simpler than any number. Lapland's rescue department says water may look frozen while the ice is thin, especially near towns, and tells visitors to go on the ice only on a marked route and with a guide.15 At Levi, the tourism site says you may walk on Lake Immeljärvi only after the winter trails are officially opened.35

Late winter and spring: the best light on the ice

March is the sweet spot for many skaters. At Kittilä Airport the average March high is -2.1 °C, and mid-March has 11.5 hrs of daylight.1 The Finnish Meteorological Institute says snow cover in Lapland is often thickest as late as early April.36 Levi's village rink, in the fell pond at the foot of the Front Slopes, runs from the end of January to week 10, weather permitting.537

Spring ice is treacherous. The Finnish Swimming Teaching and Lifesaving Federation says ice can give way under a walker even at 30 cm thick in spring, that ice holding in the morning can be dangerously weak by midday, and that it weakens faster once the snow has melted off it.3839 April averages a high of 4.1 °C with 15.6 hrs of daylight.1

Then the thaw. The Finnish Meteorological Institute says lakes in Lapland usually become ice-free in June, and Levi's tourism site notes that spring ice breakup is often followed by big early-summer floods in the north.340 The Finnish Environment Institute says inland waters now stay frozen for shorter periods, with lake ice breakup about two weeks earlier.41
